Oct 10, Hillsborough NJ: A Great Night in All Ways

It was another beautiful evening as the NPMKs made their way deep into enemy NJ territory to return triumphant in the Class V open group.   All the flags were on display  (finally!).  The weather was near perfect, except for the NPMA'er at the top row of stadium who felt a solid  no'easter at their backs.     Our official score was 87.125.

We were hot on the trail of the two VI Open bands: Immaculata HS (89.457) and John P. Stevens HS (88.2).     We were being chased by Group IV A Mount Olive HS (85.35) who had an excellent mixed music show which included a sampling of our Beethoven piece. Hillsborough Scores

Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS had the most provocative finish to a show when a band player (Agent 007) symbolically shot and killed a color guard (another spy).    No surpressed animosity like that has ever existed at North Penn.  Right?  No way!

The more seasoned NPMK parents were served a bit of nostalgia as New Providence HS dsiplayed the NPMK's  old Strength and Honor shields in their show.  They looked as good as new and one held up well as it was trampled on by ten big brass members right at the end.  As I understand, our shields were sold by the NPMA to Bridgewater-Raritan who used them and then sold them to New Providence HS.

The show closed with a Michael Jackson tribute performance by the Rutgers University Marching Band.

The only smudge on an otherwise perfect evening (hosted graciously by an army of Hillsborough volunteers) was the announcer's TOTAL butchering of a certain NPMK Pit Band parents' brilliant, witty and insightful Airgram.   The hurt party (aka the "Hillsbourough 2") are suing to get a full apology AND refund of their $2.00.
